Summer Rewind
Updated: Mar 1
Summer Reading 2022 brought an Ocean of Possibilities to Vestal! We had so much fun and wanted to share our success with you since YOU made it happen!
Over the summer, we had 435 kids participate in the Youth Services Summer Reading Challenge with 123 Infants (ages 0-5), 257 Elementary (ages 6-12), and 55 Teens (12-18). Overall, we totaled 3,348 reading hours from July 5 to August 22!
In addition, we had 82 adults participate in the Reading Challenge for Adults, with 381 punch cards issued and 214 returned. From July 5 to August 22, adults read a total of 1070 books!
VPL offered 53 total events – 34 for Youth, 9 for grown-ups, and 10 for All Ages – over a six week period in July and August. Our local businesses and community partners were an amazing support throughout our summer events. A big shout out goes to Arnold Park for hosting our summer storytimes, KOPERNIK Observatory & Science Center and their Portable Planetarium, Waterman Conservation Education Center for teaching us about local waterways, the Vestal Police Department for teaching How to Respond in an Active Shooter Situation, and Visions Federal Credit Union for their financial literacy storytime.
We are so grateful to the community for participating in our summer programs, the Summer Reading Challenge, and to the businesses who donated prizes – Binghamton Black Bears Hockey, Binghamton Rumble Ponies Baseball, California Grill, DEFY Vestal, Lickety Split, Russell Farms, and White Rose Day Spa. Your support helps to further our mission of lifelong learning and foster a love of reading in the community!
We wish you all the best in the upcoming seasons. Check VPLs website and social media for more information on events happening this fall and throughout the year.
Thank you for a FINtastic summer!
